A New Culinary Experience in Midtown
Midtown Sacramento has welcomed a fresh outdoor food pop-up event called Outside Bites, featuring a delightful array of offerings, from wood-fired pizzas and BBQ burgers to refreshing fruit frescas. This lively scene comes alive every Friday and Saturday evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
A Revived Location
The pop-up is set at the historically significant corner of 17th and J streets, which had been vacant since a two-alarm fire destroyed an auto shop in 2017. Now, this once-neglected area is buzzing with culinary excitement.
Showcasing Local Flavors
Organizer Casey Mann emphasizes the importance of highlighting the region’s diverse farm-to-fork food options. “Sacramento’s food scene as a whole is incredible and underappreciated, and that goes straight down to all the local vendors we have here,” Mann remarked.
Supporting Local Vendors
Outside Bites features about 18 food vendors, with a rotating selection each month, providing opportunities for emerging micro-businesses such as I Heart Burgers. Erica Smith from I Heart Burgers noted, “It definitely allows us to get our name out there because it’s a lower start-up cost. I want to build my brand first.”
A Community Gathering
Mann believes in the potential of these vendors, stating, “I don’t think you need a restaurant to make great food, and I think that all these vendors out here deserve the same opportunities and recognition.” The transformation from a burnt-out site to a vibrant food destination is already drawing crowds.
Customer Amber Solsa shared her excitement: “We saw all these food trucks and we wanted to see what it was all about, and it’s been amazing.” Guests can enjoy the pop-up event free of charge, with shaded seating and portable restrooms available.
