Expanded Access to HPV Vaccine
The B.C. government is taking significant steps to increase access to the HPV vaccine as part of its comprehensive 10-year Cancer Action Plan. The initiative aims to provide more residents with the opportunity to shield themselves against cancers linked to human papillomavirus (HPV).
Simplified Dosing Schedule
Under the new immunization schedule, individuals aged nine to 20 will now receive a single dose of the HPV vaccine, reducing the previous requirement of two doses. For those aged 21 and older, a two-dose regimen—with a six-month interval between shots—will remain in effect. Additionally, individuals who are immunocompromised will continue to be offered a three-dose series.
Eligibility Expansion
Further expanding the vaccine’s reach, the eligibility has been broadened to include:
- Individuals aged 19 to 26 years old.
- People aged 27 to 45 who are living with HIV and are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
Moreover, anyone who has had post-colposcopy treatments on or after July 31, 2025, can access the vaccine at any age.
Access Points for the Vaccine
The HPV vaccine will remain available at various locations, including:
- Community pharmacies
- Schools starting from grade six
- Sexually transmitted infection clinics
- Public health units
- Primary care providers and community nurses
- Local community health centres or nursing stations for First Nations communities
This initiative is a critical component of B.C.’s ongoing commitment to enhance cancer prevention, detection, and treatment for its residents.
